Scholarships are an integral part of the plan for most students attempting to further their education after high school graduation. The problem is that many students don’t know where to look for these scholarships or they become overwhelmed because there are so many scholarships out there. Hopefully the things below will be a help to you!

Please fill out this form if you have been awarded and/or have accepted a scholarship or an award. You will need to fill out this form for each scholarship or award you have accepted or have been offered. This information will allow you to be recognized at the NBHS Awards Ceremony on Date 4/24/26. A student's email must be used to fill out this form.

3 Ways to Look for Scholarships

1.) National Scholarships - These scholarships are offered to the majority of students and usually have thousands of applicants. Students should use large databases to filter and search for these scholarships

2.) College Scholarships - Don’t let the name fool you! These scholarships are the scholarships that come directly from the school you will be attending. They are usually Merit or Need based scholarships. Many times each college will have several full ride scholarships. Some examples of full ride scholarships would be:

NC State - Parks Scholarship
UNC Charlotte - Levine Scholarship
UNC - Morehead Cain Scholarship

3.) Local Scholarships - These are the scholarships that are offered locally. This usually means they will be a lower amount but it also means fewer applicants. Use the list of known local scholarships below to see what you qualify for!

3 Tips for Applying to Scholarships

Have the “Finance Talk” - Have a conversation with your guardians about who is paying for what when it comes to postsecondary education. Once that is done, sit down and review the cost of the schools that you would like to attend! Doing this will help you realize the need to take applying to scholarships seriously.

Apply, Apply, Apply! - It might be intimidating at first, but students should get in the habit of applying to scholarships weekly if not daily. At this point, you should know your financial status. Get in the habit of setting a goal each week on how many scholarships you want to apply to for that week. Start with 1 and after a couple of weeks start increasing that amount.

Save Your Work! - Every scholarship is different depending on the items needed to apply. Some will take 15 minutes to complete and some may leave you thinking you are writing another English 4 paper. Don’t let that stop you from applying! Go ahead and do it, but then have a place where you save all your essays and recommendations! The suggestion would be to use Google Drive so if your device gets messed up you will still have access to your work. Doing this will help you save time, and be able to apply to many scholarships in a short period of time!

Local Scholarships (25-26)

AH Bangert Scholarship & Loan Opportunity

The trustees, Craven County Board of Education, offer three A. H. Bangert programs to students who meet the following requirements:

be a graduate of a public high school in Craven County
be formally accepted for admission to an accredited college or university
maintain a grade point average of 3.0 for the scholarship or
maintain a grade point average of 2.5 for the loan program

For the 2025-2026 school year, there will be at least eight (8) Bangert scholarships of $4,000 each to high school seniors enrolled in the Craven County School System to assist them in furthering education. These scholarships are for the college freshman year only and are paid directly to your college/university. Selection of the recipients is based on academic ability (high school cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher) and financial need. These scholarships are available for all in-state 2 and 4 year colleges and universities (no private colleges).

ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY, INC. RHO ALPHA LAMBDA YOUTH LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE MINORITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

American Legion Oratorical Scholarship 25-26

The American Legion Oratorical Contest exists to develop deeper knowledge and appreciation for the U.S. Constitution among high school students. Since 1938, the program has presented participants with an academic speaking challenge that teaches important leadership qualities, the history of our nation’s laws, the ability to think and speak clearly, and an understanding of the duties, responsibilities, rights and privileges of American citizenship. The program has featured numerous politicians and prominent contestants over the years, including former presidential candidate Alan Keyes, national television commentator and talk radio host Lou Dobbs, and former U.S. Vice President Mike Pence.

Young orators earn some of the most generous college scholarships available to high school students. Over $203,500 in scholarships can be awarded each year. The overall national contest winner gets a $25,000 scholarship. Second place takes home $22,500, and third gets $20,000. Each department (state) winner who is certified into and participates in the national contest’s first round receives a $2,000 scholarship. Those who advance past the first round receive an additional $2,000 scholarship. The American Legion’s National Organization awards the scholarships, which can be used at any college or university in the United States.

Arthur and Jean Estes Scholarship.

Originally, the scholarship was intended for students from Trinity United Methodist Church; now the scholarship is available to all students who have or are graduating from a New Bern public high school. The amounts and number of college scholarships may vary year to year, depending on availability of funds. The Trinity UMC Endowment Committee, in its sole discretion, shall determine the amounts and number of scholarships for graduating seniors during a called meeting.

Fairfield Harbour Garden Club 2026 Scholarship

FAITH CONNECTION/STEWARDS OF THE EARTH

Faith Connection’s Stewards of the Earth program is offering a scholarship for a student
interested in pursuing further education in an environmental field at an accredited two-
year or four- year North Carolina college or university. This education might prepare a
student for a career such as a conservation officer, a park ranger, an environmental
engineer, a researcher in environmental science, or a wildlife or marine biologist.

A minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required. Priority will be given to early college
students, but any Craven Community College student may apply.

Heroes UNSUNG Scholarships

The Heroes UNSUNG Scholarship Committee, will award one or more scholarships every year, based on the availability of funds to academically meritorious or students who can demonstrate need. Other scholarships and financial aid already awarded will be taken into consideration but will not determine eligibility.

The Johnnie and Ethel Sampson Scholarship - Goes to an African American senior.

The John M. Smith Scholarship - The award goes to someone who exemplifies character and leadership.

NBHS Class of 57’ Scholarships - Award goes to 2 seniors who are either planning to major in a branch of Engineering or in an area of STEM.

The William Pierce Memorial Scholarship - The award goes to someone to help achieve their educational goals.

Neuse Pamlico Women’s Coalition, Inc. Scholarships

NPSWC, Inc. awards scholarships each year to high school seniors in our service area, which consists of Carteret, Craven, Pamlico, and Jones counties. We could not make that happen without your assistance. Our three scholarships are 1) The Claire Martin Combs Memorial

New Bern High School Class of 1973 Scholarship

New Bern High School Hall of Fame Scholarship Endowment

If you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for this North Carolina Community
Foundation scholarship. It's free and easy to apply through the NCCF Scholarships Portal.
CRITERIA: New Bern High School students who have participated in varsity sports for at least 2 years on at least one team, who have sound academic performance, and who are attending a community college, college, or university. Financial need may be considered.

New Bern (NC) Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Scholarship

The members of the New Bern (NC) Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi are offering a $1500 one time scholarship to a graduating senior. The deadline for submission is March 1, 2026. The criteria are as follows:

1. Male student

2. Craven, Pamlico, Jones, or Onslow Counties

3. A mix of need and merit (2.5 grade point average minimum) can be considered and is at discretion of committee.

4. Any accredited four-year degree granting institution.

5. Minimum one page essay on themselves, qualifications, and future plans as a student and young adult.

New Bern Historical Society: Mark & Taylor Scholarships 2026

The Marks Scholarship was established in a trust for the estate of Miss Harriett Marks in 1968, under the terms of Miss Marks’ will as a memorial to the O. Marks family. The Taylor Scholarship, although a separate entity, is designed to complement and supplement the Marks Scholarship. It was created in 2015 and is administered by the North Carolina Community Foundation and sponsored by their grandson to honor the memory of his grandparents. These two scholarships are awarded annually to one recipient based on both academic performance and financial need. The combined funds generated by these scholarships will provide greater financial assistance for the worthy recipient. Both scholarships designate that they be awarded to a senior graduating from New Bern High School and that they contribute to the tuition, board or lodging for the purpose of obtaining higher education at an accredited college, university, or other institution of higher learning. They are renewable for three succeeding years if academic standards and full-time student status are maintained.

New Bern Woman's Club Senior Scholarship

This scholarship is available to all high school seniors or seniors from Craven Early College. It is awarded based on the applicant's character, scholastic records, evidence of intellectual promise, demonstration of ambition, leadership ability, and financial need.

The applicant must be a resident of Craven County and in the upper fourth of the class. The student's school must be an accredited North Carolina School.

The scholarship is to be used at an accredited community college, four-year college, or university.

NMCRS Education Assistance

The NMCRS Education Assistance Program is designed to help eligible Navy and Marine Corps families pursue their academic goals by providing scholarships and interest-free loans. Awards are provided based on the applicant's financial need, and in accordance with policies established by the Society's Board of Directors.

Applications for NMCRS Education Assistance program will be open from March 10 through May 15, 2025. To be ready to apply, be sure to have submitted a 2025-26 FAFSA application, as NMCRS applications require a current FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI). Please note that our funds have been allocated for the 2024-25 school year. Nu Alpha Charities awards scholarships annually, on behalf of the Nu Alpha Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., to deserving high school students. Students who apply for the scholarship are judged by a Scholarship Committee composed of members, Educators, and Business professionals. The best qualified are selected for the awards based on established criteria.
