My name is Jennifer Askins and I have been a school counselor for the last 17 years. This is my first year at New Bern High School and I support students with the last name K-P.  I also serve as the school's 504 coordinator. My experience includes critical incident and trauma counseling, risk and threat assessment training, extensive community involvement, substance abuse counseling, and knowledge of the military recruitment, and the community college and college application process.  I graduated from NCSU with my undergraduate degree and received my master's degree from Campbell University.  I am a HUGE Wolfpack fan through and through, have been married for over 25 years, and have two sons in college.  Proud to be a New Bern bear!!

This is my 12th year as a school counselor, and my 22nd year in education. My education career began as a middle school teacher, then I became an elementary school counselor, and this year, I transferred to New Bern High School as a school counselor.

My husband and I have been married for 32 years, and we have two adult daughters.  We have lived in New Bern for 28 years.  Best news- I will be a grandmother in June!  

My goal as a school counselor is to support and guide my students so they can be the best version of themselves.  As a school counselor, my priority is to foster their hopes and dreams, and help them turn those dreams into a reality.  I partner with  parents and educators to guide their students succeed in high school and beyond.

My name is Brittany Spellman and I have been a school counselor for 3 years. Born and raised in New Bern I attended Havelock High and graduated in 2010. From there I attended UNC Greensboro where I received my bachelors degree in Media Studies. After working as a substitute teacher I realized my true calling was to work in education. I received my Masters in School Counseling in 2021 from Capella University. I truly love being a high school counselor and love working with students and watching them realize their dreams and reach their full potential. I am proud to be a New Bern Bear!

I am a devoted father, loving husband, and a retired Marine with roots originally in Allentown, PA. Having called New Bern home for the past decade, I bring a wealth of experience and passion to the community. 

My journey in education services began at West Craven High School in the 2018-19 school year, following a distinguished 22-year career in the Marine Corps. During that time, I had the privilege of working in administration and coaching volleyball—an enriching experience that fueled my dedication to serving the educational needs of our youth.

In pursuit of new opportunities, I briefly explored the private sector, but my commitment to community service drew me back to Craven County Schools in the fall of 2023. Thrilled to join the esteemed team at New Bern High School, I am not only a staff member but also a proud parent of two NBHS students, classes of 2026 and 2027.  My oldest daughter also graduated from NBHS in 2016.

I consider myself an ally and resource for fellow parents, constantly seeking ways to enhance our support system for students, families, and teachers alike. My ultimate goal is to contribute to the continual improvement of our school, striving to make it the absolute best in the county.

I am genuinely proud and excited to be an integral part of Bear Country, and I look forward to fostering an environment where excellence thrives for our students and community.

Most Students Are Eligible to Receive Financial Aid from the Federal Government to Help Pay for College or Career School. Your Age, Race, or Field of Study Won’t Affect Your Eligibility for Federal Student Aid. While Your Income Is Taken into Consideration, It Doesn’t Automatically Prevent You from Getting Federal Student Aid.

How To Get Started:

1. Create an Account 

Fafsa Strongly Recommends Creating an Account Before Starting Your Fafsa Form. Your Account Username and Password Combination, Called Your Fsa Id, Gives You Access to Certain Information Online and Allows You to Sign Your Fafsa® Form and Promissory Notes Electronically. 

2. Gather the Documents You Need to Apply

The Fafsa Questions Ask for Information About You (Your Name, Date of Birth, Address, Etc.) and About Your Financial Situation. Depending on Your Circumstances (for Instance, Whether You’re a U.s. Citizen or What Tax Form You Used), You Might Need the Following Information or Documents As You Fill out the Fafsa Application.

3. Create a "Save Key" 

Near the Beginning of the Fafsa Form, You’ll Create a “save Key,” a Temporary Password That You’ll Use If You Start Your Fafsa Form, save It Without Finishing It, Then Want to Open It Again Later to Finish It.

4. List Colleges 

While Completing the Fafsa Form, You Must List at Least One School to Receive Your Information. The Schools You List Will Use Your Fafsa Information to Determine the Types and Amounts of Aid You May Receive. Use the Federal School Code Search to Find the Colleges You’re Interested in Including in Your Fafsa Form.

You Should Add Any School That You Plan on Applying to, or That You Have Applied to, Even If You Haven’t Been Accepted yet. In Most Cases, Once a School Accepts You, They Will Then Work on Developing Your Aid Offer.

5. Next Steps 

After You Submit Your Fafsa Form Online, You Can Check Its Status Immediately by Going to Fafsa.gov and Logging in with Your Username and Password. (Note: Only the Student Can Check the Status.)

The Status of Your Application Will Be One of the Following.
 

• Processing: Your Application Is Still Processing. It Typically Takes Three to Five Days, plus One Additional Business Day to Be Made Available to the Schools You Listed on the Form.
• Processed Successfully: Your Application Was Processed Successfully. No Further Action Is Needed.
• Missing Signatures: Your Application Is Missing the Required Signature(S).
• Action Required: Your Application Requires Further Action. Contact Your School to Resolve the Issue.

Each college may have its own deadline. Check with the college(s) you’re interested in attending. You may also want to ask your college about its definition of an application deadline. Is it the date your FAFSA form is processed or the date the college receives your processed FAFSA data?

The Joint 2+2 Engineering Program allows students to complete the first one to two years of an engineering curriculum at UNC Asheville, qualify for transfer to NC State University, and finish their education in two to three more years at NC State's College of Engineering in Raleigh, NC.

ENC Regionally Increasing Baccalaureate Nurses (RIBN) provides students with a four-year option in which they complete an Associate Degree and Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.

The Eastern North Carolina RIBN program dually admits students to East Carolina University and one of the local community colleges that partner with the ECU College of Nursing.

GOVERNOR'S SCHOOL OF NORTH CAROLINA

The Governor's School of North Carolina is a 5½-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. The curriculum focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and it does not involve credit, tests, or grades. Students are selected to attend through a competitive process after being nominated by their public school unit or non-public school.
