Grading & Credits

New Bern High School uses semester scheduling, similar to college courses. Students are scheduled for 4 credits in the fall semester and 4 credits in the spring semester. Most students will have 2 core classes and 2 elective classes per semester. Some programs such as AVID and OCS do offer some full-year courses; speak with your guidance counselor for more information about these programs.

Grading & GPA Scale

Note: Effective July 1, 2015 North Carolina changed to a standardized 10-point grading scale.
Prior to July 2015, North Carolina school districts used a variety of 7-point grading scales.
Note: All courses taken at the middle school for high school requirement(s) will not calculate in the GPA.
Note: High School Earned Credits only are calculated.

Report Cards

New Bern High School provides physical report cards upon request only*. Grades listed on Power School on the established "report card date" have been reviewed and are accurate. Teacher comments can also be viewed via the PowerSchool App or the browser website.

Accessing Comments via PowerSchool App

In the PowerSchool App, comments are available by clicking on the course and choosing the current term (Q1, Q2, Q3, Q4). Comments are associated with the Quarter grades (E1 is an exam grade, while F1 is the final course grade). Once the proper term is selected, click on the text bubble to review comments.

Accessing Comments via PS website

In the PowerSchool website, while using the left Navigation Bar, select Teacher Comments and then select the current reporting term.

English:

1.) English 1, 2.) English 2, 3.) English 3 or AP English Language and Composition or ENG 111, ENG 112, ENG 231/232, 4.) and English 4 or AP English Literature and Composition or ENG 111, ENG 112, ENG 241/242.

Math:

1.) Math 1, 2.) Math 2, 3.) Math 3, 4.) and a 4th Math (University requires a higher level math than Math 3).

Science:

1.) Earth Environmental Science, 2.) A physical science (Chemistry, Physics, or Physical Science, 3.) and Biology.

Social Studies:

1.) World History, 2.) American History or AP US History or HIS 131 and HIS 132, 3.) Founding Principles of the United States of America and North Carolina: Civic Literacy, 4.) and Economics and Personal Finance
